The state of a potential Legend of Korra spin-off is not great. While fans cross their fingers and pray for Netflix to swoop in and rescue the series from cancellation (or anyone, really- any studio could swoop in at any time), there's been no official word from Netflix or anyone else. Worse still, Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have dissolved their creative partnership after the end of Korra in its fourth season. Considering those two were masterminds of the entire Avatar universe, things aren't looking so hot.
But there's one potential avenue for more Avatar stories that hasn't been pursued as heavily as Netflix: comics. The Avatar series has a healthy comic book following, with several stories from the Avatar universe (and even some set after the series, in the middle ground between The Last Avatar and Korra).
These comics are fairly succesful and they're still running (the latest, Smoke and Shadow, is set to debut its first issue this September). But there's been very little Korra in comic form- could this be a potential way to, if not revive Korra, at least have her chug along a little bit farther?
A recent online petition for more Avatar stories hints that Korra could continue as a comic- since the petition, there's been rumblings that it's possible Dark Horse might throw in a Korra comic or two among their Avatar comics. But there's no official word yet, meaning Korra's future looks just as uncertain (and dire) as ever.
At least Korra fans still have Smoke and Shadow to look forward to. That's something, right?
The Legend of Korra wrapped up its final season, Book Four: Balance, in December of 2014. The series ended on a huge twist- Korra and Asami coming together to start a relationship, which as a same-sex relationship, is a pretty rare thing in the world of cartoons. Keep an eye out for any official news from Nickelodeon.
