Spark Unlimited shuts down after project cancelations and still undisclosed "issues" that was big enough for company executives to throw the towel. As Spark employees are laid off, remaining company assets are now set up for auction.
The news of the Spark Unlimited shutting down was first reported by Polygon. John Butrovich, Chief Technical Officer said that,
"...it's the end of Spark as a game developer."
Butrovich also pointed out that Principal members of the studio "have decided to move on to other things,"
Prior to this, Spark President and CEO, Craig Allen had already left the company, which was a sure sign that there is something going bad inside the Spark. After a few months, the company is now in the process of shutting down, laid off its employees and have put into auction is remaining assets.
The assets are set up for auction at CMA Auctions. Company assets ranging from computers, HD TV equipment, servers to coffee tables and microwaves. Interested buyers must submit their written offers by May 6, payment by May 7 and removal of bought items on May 13. Though there is no details who got the lot, but the said assets are still posted on the CMA website.
However, some already saw the Spark Unlimited shutdown coming as the company had difficult time winning the ratings war over their games. In an article posted at trueachievements.com, Doominatorx6's blog callously states
"I agree it's not good karma to cheer the demise of Spark Unlimited but if any developer has to go bust I'd rather it was them."
His dismay was not that unfounded as his blog details why Spark Unlimited will eventually kick the bucket and it did.
Though it is not sure what "other things" principal members of the company will venture into, but it is now certain that the company that brought Lost Planet 3 and Call of Duty: Finest Hour is no more.
