Jeremy Renner has earned the ire of the internet thanks to a self-described "tasteless joke". While The Avengers: Age of Ultron star remains unapologetic over the remark, Renner insists that he definitely has love towards his co-star, Scarlett Johansson.
The 30-year old actor took to his Twitter and posted a red picture of him and Johansson. "Happy FIRST Mother's Day to you! What a beautiful blessing for you and your girl #sweetscarlet #mothersday." Renner tweeted.
Jeremy Renner came under fire in April when he and another Avengers co-star, Chris Evans called Johansson's character, Black Widow 'a slut.' The actor would call the comic book hero a slut because ''she didn't end up with Hawkeye during the end of The Age of Ultron." Chris Evans, on the other hand called Black Widow " a whore complete whore who flirts with everybody." Many were furious at both actor's statements and found it offensive. Fans took to social media to criticize both actors for using those derogatory terms to describe a female superhero.
Both actors would later call their statements "juvenile" and "tastless" during separate interviews. Renner, while apparently taken aback by all the internet hate remains 'unapologetic' over the joke that he made.
"I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour," according to the Hawkeye actor.
The actor would later appear in an interview with Conan O'Brien, in which he touched the controversial issue again. Renner insisted that he never turned the remarks on Johansson, but rather on Black Widow who was just a 'fictional character.'
"It was a joke - off-colored or whatever - but yeah, I'm unapologetic about a lot of things ... mind you, I was talking about a fictional character and fictional behavior," said Renner.
