Filmmaker Kevin Smith took to his social media page and made the announcement that the 1995 cult classic comedy Mall Rats will be getting its sequel. The director announced that the movie's sequel will be called MallBrats.
The actor, who also played Silent Bob in Mall Rats posted the initial draft of the film's script on his Facebook page, "IT'S MALL OR NOTHING! 20 years in the making. 113 pages fulla old friends, new jokes and a bloody battle with Stan Lee! This is for you, Jim. Wish you were here... #MallBrats" Kevin Smith wrote.
Smith was inspired to make the sequel of Mall Rats when his friend and fellow producer, James "Jim" Jacks passed away last year. Jim was one of the original producers of Mall Rats and his passing pushed Smith to make the long overdue sequel.
Stan Lee, the legendary creator of iconic superheroes such as Spider-Man and the X-Men, will be given a more key role in the upcoming sequel. The comic icon had starred in the previous Mall Rats film, but was given a small role. Lee was ecstatic about his upcoming role in the sequel.
"Oh my god, finally, now I'll get more than two lines," Lee said. "Thank god, I'm only 92. What were you waiting for?"
Smith reveals that the upcoming film will include 18 returning characters, as well as 6 new characters. It seems like Ben Affleck won't be returning for the sequel.
"Of the 18 characters, 15 [actors] are confirmed to return," he said. "Plus, 6 new characters who have their own storylines."
Smith also revealed that the production for MallBrats was pushed to an earlier date because the crew had found a "perfect location" for filming. '
"We require a big old empty mall, and it would be nice if we could do things to the mall," Smith said. "So if you had a mall and the mall was eventually going away, that would let you, like, blow the f****ing mall up, which happens in the third act. So we found a place... [and] based on a f****ing mall that we all dig that will be going away, the priority has become 'Mallrats.'"
Returning cast includes Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Michael Rooker, Jason Mewes and Ethan Suplee.
MallBrats will be filmed later this year and will be given a release date sometime in 2016.
