X-Men Spinoff movie to be named The New Mutants recently announced by Fox

The Marvel universe continues to expand with the recent announcement that a new X-Men spinoff movie known as The New Mutants is currently in the works from Fox. For casual Marvel fans who only recently got into this world of superheroes after they made their onscreen debuts, The New Mutants may be a group they are not too familiar with.

If the movie stays true to its comic book sources, then The New Mutants would likely feature less-heralded characters such as Cannonball, Cypher, and Dani Moonstar among others as the stars of the film, according to Coming Soon.

Other characters from the X-Men universe who popped up alongside The New Mutants include Professor X, Magneto, and the always interesting Deadpool. It is entirely possible that Fox does not want to build a new superhero movie franchise upon relatively unknown characters, so they might just put all those guys and girls together with the bigger names such as Cyclops, Wolverine, and so on, but at this point, Fox is not revealing anything more.

Eagle-eyed Marvel movie viewers have in fact already seen some of The New Mutants in action, since Sunspot and Warpath have already appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, according to Screen Rant. Fox has already tabbed a director for the movie in the person of Josh Boone. Boone, who will also be co-writing the film, previously directed The Fault in Our Stars, according to The Verge.

Other names who have already been announced as parts of the project include Knate Gwaltney as co-writer, along with Simon Kinberg and Laura Shuler Donner as the producers. Aside from simply trying to figure out how to put the movie together, the people in charge will also be tasked with paring down the list of suitable mutants to make the film as appealing and exciting as it can be.

There's no word on a release date as of yet, but rumors suggest that The New Mutants could be the X-Men film Fox was talking up for a 2018 release.
