The Nexus 5 is set to receive the Android 5.1.1 update from Sprint, while the Moto E is expected to get the same Android version as soon as Motorola confirms positive test results.
According to reports, Sprint made a formal announcement in their support site regarding the update. Starting 11 May, Sprint issued the new LMY48B Android 5.1.1 firmware via OTA update in stages, and is expected to address known camera issues related to the Face detection function. Any and all other bugs are going to be fixed as well.
The Sprint Android 5.1.1 update rollout is going to be pushed for Nexus 5 phones still running stock Android versions. Any modifications will prevent the OTA update from happening, so it would be best to find ways to roll the device back to the original Android version.
The 4.9-inch Nexus 5 originally came with Android 4.4 KitKat when it was first released in October 2013. It has a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset with a Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU, an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM. It has an 8MP main camera and a 1.3MP front clicker. Its non-expandable internal storage has 2 variants: a 16GB and a 32GB.
Meanwhile, the 4.3-inch Moto E 1st Gen which was released exactly a year ago is also set to receive the Android 5.1.1 update within the coming days or weeks at the most.
"In parallel we have started testing Lollipop 5.1 which was recently released by Google. Given the improvements in Lollipop 5.1, we have decided to move all efforts to upgrade these devices directly from KitKat to Lollipop 5.1," Motorola product management senior director David Schuster said.
"We have starting a number of test soaks with 5.1 in a number of regions and hope to be fully deploying the upgrades soon," he added. The Moto E, as well as the Moto X and Moto G LTE units will skip the Android 5.0 update in an effort to avoid any and all issues other OEMs encountered with that OS.
The Moto E first came with the Android 4.4.2 upon its release. Under the hood, its Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 chipset is backed by a Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU, Adreno 302 GPU and 1GB RAM. Its 4GB internal storage is expandable up to 32GB via microSD. It has a single 5MP camera. Motorola is known for its stripped-down, almost-stock Android OS installs which lets its units enjoy a quicker response time from both hardware and apps.
The Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2012 and 2013, Nexus 9 Wi-Fi, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 are all either set to receive the update or have received the Android 5.1.1 update already.
The Android 5.1.1 update promises to make the whole Android experience much more hassle-free not only for Nexus 5 and Moto E users, but for a lot of other models too that's why all other manufacturers are thinking about making the jump as soon as possible.
