The Cannes Film Festival routinely features the cream of the crop in terms of acting and filmmaking talent, but this year could pit more local and international films going head to head for the major awards. One of the films generating a lot of buzz even before its Cannes Film Festival premiere is none other than "Carol," starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
The film featuring both Blanchett and Mara engaging in a romantic relationship set in the middle of the 20th century has been tabbed as one of the leading contenders to take home major awards at the festivities this year, according to Vanity Fair. Todd Haynes directed the film. Blanchett is no stranger to prestigious honors, as the actress has two Academy Awards under her belt.
Another international film favored to take home honors from the proceedings is "The Sea of Trees" from director Gus Van Sant. The film follows a suicidal American man wandering within the forests of Mt. Fuji as he encounters and befriends a Japanese man. "The Sea of Trees" stars Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, and Ken Watanabe, according to Blu-Ray Definition.
More Hollywood heavyweights join the ensemble cast of the film "Youth" from director Paolo Sorrentino. The film starring Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, Harvey Keitel, and Rachel Weisz features an in-depth look at the lives of hotel guests and their children.
The local film scene is not without its own representation at the festival, as the 2015 Cannes Film Festival will feature a good number of French movies. Some of the best films making an appearance at the festival, which also just happened to be French, include "Standing Tall" from director Emmanuelle Bercot, "La Loi du Marche" from Stephanie Brizet, among numerous other notables, according to RFI.
Also of note is Guillaume Nicloux's "The Valley of Love," starring the always controversial Gerard Depardieu. The 2015 Cannes Film Festival began on May 13 and will conclude on the 24th.
