HomeKit from Apple will be released in June as announced by the tech company on Thursday. Apple did not mention a lot about producing its own hardware for the app and partnerships with several manufacturers is in the works although challenges may cause some delays.
HomeKit is an app developed by the Cupertino based company that aims to unite controls over home equipment and appliances for a more convenient and remote accessibility. The idea is to have a centralized control of locking and unlocking doors, turning lights off, adjusting thermostat and operating on similar electronic home devices that are synced together in the HomeKit.
This concept of regulating home devices has been existing for a few years but it has not fully bloomed in the market as of yet. Start ups such as SmartThings and Revolv has been selling both software and hardware for this home improvement concept. Apple intends to tap this market by being a hub to such devices as it confirmed the HomeKit release in June.
Sources revealed that Apple is expecting its HomeKit devices by June as the company has been working with partner manufacturers. The announcement was made on Thursday as the company gave details on the mechanisms of the platform. According to Apple's representative, HomeKit will enable connected accessories to communicate and activated through Siri. It's still unclear if HomeKit will be available to consumers in its WWDC in June or if it's the release date with the availability date at a later time. There were earlier reports that the devices will be launched in fall.
Earlier leaked info says that partner manufacturers' devices will be launched in August or September due to delayed feature developments on the devices. Sources mentioned problems with HomeKit software stabilization. One of the problems brought up was having too much memory needed for small battery operated devices where Apple had to shrink down the codes.
It's possible for Apple to still be able to launch the HomeKit platform with a staggered introduction of its devices. Therefore, Apple fans will likely have some new HomeKit devices periodically as it continues to resolve its software setbacks.
