Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg aims high for Oculus Rift, hoping that it will open the gate towards improving virtual reality experience. After investing $2 billion on buying Oculus Rift, he is planning to make every effort to turn this VR gadget into an outstanding success.
Zuckerberg openly shows his optimism for Oculus Rift, though previous statements from the 30 year-old billionaire tell that at least 50 - 100 million units must be sold to have a meaningful effect in people's lives. However, Zuckerberg continues to share his vision for Oculus Rift to people and how the device may be the gateway to the future of VR experience.
Zuckerberg said in a question and answer session on Facebook covered by Gamespot,
"Our mission [is] to give people the power to experience anything..."
he continued on,
"...Even if you don't have the ability to travel somewhere, or to be with someone in person, or even if something is physically impossible to build in our analog world, the goal is to help build a medium that will give you the ability to do all of these things you might not otherwise be able to do."
However at the moment, it would seem that only those with high-end computer rigs will be able to use the VR gadget. The Oculus website posted the device's system requirements.
NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
8GB+ RAM
Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
2x USB 3.0 ports
Windows 7 SP1 or newer
IGN reiterated that this is the recommended specs to full enjoy the capabilities of the Oculus Rift. Though Zuckerberg is highly optimistic, at the moment, the general public will not quickly catch on to this device, until software and game developers begin to take risks and pump in support to make the VR industry flourish. Unless there are meaningful reasons why people should buy this VR device, it will continue to be a luxury item rather than a necessity. The Oculus Rift is set for release on Q1 2016.
