After the season 2 cliff hanger, what's next for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? One thing's for sure, we can expect an answer (or answers) to the burning question: What happened to Simmons? Producers hint that she's definitely not dead, and the finale is a precursor to a rescue plot for the next season. And more screen time for the Simmons-Fitz (possible) romance.
One of Marvel's more successful TV ventures, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. just ended the second season with a cliff hanger and fans are eager to find out what's in store for next season. After the success of The Avengers and Ironman, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) became a popular household name, giving the production bigwigs the idea of a TV show headed by the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent himself. And they were right, fans jumped right in and the TV show gained a following.
Created by The Avengers director Joss Whedon, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. focuses on Agent Phil Coulson's small team of special agents who are called upon to investigate strange and unexplainable phenomena. In a world with superheroes, the agents somehow still believe in humanity and not rely too much on them heroes.
The TV show's two-hour finale for Agents of SHIELD Season 2 was quite epic, with a lot of shocking revelations. The real baddie wasn't really Ward (Brett Dalton), or Sunil Bakshi, or even crazy Cal. It is actually Jiaying, with a mini (action-packed and surprisingly emotional) family reunion for Skye (Chloe Bennet) and her parents (Jiaying and Cal). All the action then ends with agent Coulson's hand getting chopped off to save his life. As things start settling down, we see Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) starting to get comfortable and go beyond the Friendzone, but of course, things don't go well. And that's where the cliff hanger happens. Simmons suddenly gets sucked up by the Kree artifact. And the season ends.
If it's any clue, this ending could signal the events that we can expect for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Season 3. As the announcement for the show's approval for season 3, the cast who are coming back were also confirmed and it includes Elizabeth Henstridge, who plays Simmons. So we are sure that Simmons is not dead, and that means rescue mission for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents - we're just not sure where she was taken by the Kree. This search and rescue, including the figuring out of her whereabouts, will be a major theme during the first half of season 3. And of course, fans expect the Simmons-Fitz romance to take up more screen time.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently on a season break and will resume with season 3 scheduled to premiere in September.
