From the moment Supergirl was first seen, hordes of fans already began dreaming up a way in which she could be tied into the shows containing the other DC superheroes, but it appears those ideas are a bit premature.
It seems the closest Supergirl will come to meeting another DC superhero for now is on the cover of a magazine, just as she did when she posed together with the flash for the cover of Variety. Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl, and Grant Gustin, who plays The Flash, appeared on the cover of the magazine along with executive producer of their respective shows, Greg Berlanti. Berlanti is also the executive producer for Arrow, according to IGN.
One would think that the cover shot itself is an indicator that a crossover is now in the works for Supergirl, but that appears to not be the case. In his interview with Variety, Berlanti said Supergirl may be the one character to not participate in any crossovers any time soon.
Given the fact that the Supergirl character does introduce a bit more perceived bankability than some of her superhero cohorts, it would make sense if her home network valued her as a more valuable commodity. Despite any imminent crossover plans being nixed for now, Berlanti says he remains hopeful Supergirl will soon be able to participate in those as well, and he suggests that those will come if the show is successful.
Berlanti has certainly been unafraid of trying crossovers before, as he has done those episodes for both Arrow and The Flash.
If there is a possibility that no crossover will take place for Supergirl, it could be because her home network, CBS, has chosen to intentionally keep her away from that jumbled space. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Supergirl appears to be set in a different kind of DC universe from the one that shows such as Arrow and The Flash are set in.
If that is the case, she may forever be soaring the skies by her lonesome, unless Superman drops by. Crossover or not, fans are still excited about the arrival of Supergirl, and she will make her television debut later this year.
