Homeland Season 5 is set to take America's "War on Terror" storyline to Europe when it returns to the small screen this fall.
Homeland showrunners revealed the show is moving its setting from Middle East to Berlin. The production is set to film the entire series in Europe. The move makes Homeland the first American television series to shoot a full season in Germany.
Showtime also disclosed Homeland Season 5 begins production in June. The new season will be filmed at Studio Babelsberg in Berlin.
Showtime reportedly received some flak last season for Homeland's Middle East-set storylines. Showtime president David Nevins earlier told media that the show was addressing concerns about its Muslim extremists' plots.
The move to Europe apparently is an answer to these concerns. Nevins clarified, "We're not necessarily going to stay now and forever [focusing on] U.S. relations in the Muslim world. It's a show ultimately about U.S. foreign policy, U.S. intelligence in the 21st century at a very difficult time. The real franchise of the show is how difficult it is to be America in the world in the 21st century, how difficult the choices are."
The new story setting will have former Islamabad Station Chief Carrie Mathison on a self-imposed exile in Berlin away from her former work with the CIA. Carrie will be "struggling to reconcile her guilt and disillusionment with years of working on the front lines in the 'war on terror.'"
A time jump in the series will bring the story two years forward since the end of Season 4. Carrie will be working for a private security firm and caring for her child.
But Agent Carrie's former life comes back to haunt her normal life as a mother with a new love interest when Saul and Quinn reappear bringing with them the CIA's agenda in Europe.
Homeland Season 6 will have 12 episodes premiering in the fall.
