With his aim to widen his acting opportunities, Danny Pino left 'Law & Order SVU' Season 17. It's still unclear whether or not will have a newbie partner. But, it was recently hinted the show might make room for a rookie Det. Sonny Carisi, played by Peter Scanavino. Also, the series will feature a special story to tell coming season.

Season 16 of 'Law & Order SVU' left fans in wonder when Amaro decided to leave Olivia Benson and retire to the West Coast to be with his family, after he was shot by the sex trafficker Johnny D. The sadness added when actor Danny Pino confirmed his exit from the show through Twitter.

Now, Pino's departure could make room for a new lieutenant and/or sergeant to help Olivia hold down the fort in ''Law & Order SVU' Season 17', especially now that she is officially a mother. Actor Peter Scanavino is speculated to be Olivia's new buddy. Det. Sonny Carisi, played by the actor, joined the team this year when Amaro was temporarily reassigned. But, Scanavino or the show has yet to give confirmation regarding this possibility.

It was reported that Pino left the show because he wants to widen his acting opportunities, as what 'Law & Order' SVU executive producer Warren Leight revealed. While his intentions were good, Leight added that his characters' long experience "ended up putting him in trouble with the brass downtown."

With Amaro's exit, the 17th season of 'Law & Order' SVU will bring new and topics to be tackled. One of which is about the transgender community. In a recent interview, Leight said they are planning to talk more on "dark areas." And, they are currently working on a story about a transgender teenager.

The actor also added that it's always a challenge for them to bring fresh and keeping the show alive. 'Law & Order SVU' Season 17 will air in the fall.
