The Godzilla game for Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 is a little late to the game. Gareth Edwards' remake of Godzilla premiered last May; this game won't hit store shelves until July. Still, more giant green monsters in video game form are always appreciated, and the latest trailer for Godzilla (the game, like the remake, is going for total title simplicity) makes it look like an unbelievable 100-foot-tall ball of entertainment.
The trailer features a ton of monsters from the Godzilla pantheon: Mechagodzilla, Biolante, Hedorah, King Ghidora, Destoroyah, Gigan, SpaceGodzilla and Kiryu (although the game will also feature Jet Jaguar and a slew of Godzilla-related vehicles. Of course, the game also features several incarnations of the big green guy himself- the 1989 and 1995 designs of Godzilla, plus the newest design from last year's reboot.
Interestingly, the latest trailer doesn't refer to the 2014 Godzilla as '2014 Godzilla.' Instead, it calls the big beast 'Hollywood Godzilla.' Could that be the first we've heard of an official nickname for the new Godzilla? The last American version of the monster, from Roland Emmerich's much-derided 1998 remake, ended up with the nickname Zilla. Eventually, the Edwards design would need its own nickname- and it might finally have arrived.
The upcoming Godzilla game has several kaiju-centric modes- one that has the player take on the role of Godzilla and wreak as much destruction as he can on a single city (with an alternate mode seeing the player as a protector kaiju, guarding the city from an invading beast). There's also an arcade-style single player mode and online multiplayer modes as well. The inclusion of G-Energy is a new feature in the game- a powerup that will allow Godzilla to grow larger and more powerful (and with a bundle of upgraded moves, of course) by collecting more and more of it. Godzilla will stomp North American game stores into a fine powder on July 14, 2015.
