Cameron Crow Apologize to "Aloha" Critics: Violent Reaction For Bad Casting Addressed; Movie Continues to Receive Poor Review?

By

Director Cameron Crowe answered to the violent reactions he received from critics upon the release of movie Aloha as the film continues to receive poor reviews.

USA Today reported that Crowe didn't keep silent when he learned all the criticism against his movie Aloha. He expressed his apology through his blog site "The Uncool." He said, "I have heard your words and your disappointment, and I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice."

He explained further that the character of Emma Stone was written in 2007 and Allison Ng's personality was meant to appear as a super-proud ¼ Hawaiian yet a frustrated individual who doesn't actually look one. Her character (and looks) was intended to show the "surprising mix of cultures" which is very common in the island. That explains why she had to over-explain her roots whenever she had the chance to.

Aside from expressing his sincere apology, Crowe also said that the person to blame is him and not Emma Stone.

Director Crowe began his article in his blog saying that his movie "Aloha" has turned out to be misunderstood since it has first appeared in the Sony Hack. He went on saying that "...people felt they knew a lot about, but in fact they knew very little." Crowe boldly admittedly that Aloha was a small movie, but then it was made by passionate actors who decided to work with him in making a movie about Hawaii at the same time reflect the lives of his characters who were residing and were employed in and around Oahu.

Aside from apologizing for his poor casting, Cameron Crowe said that his movie had employed many Asian-American, Native-Hawaiian, and Pacific-Islanders. This statement seemed to indirectly address the negative comment about not making the locals part of his film. They maybe not in front of the camera, but locals worked closely with his team to make certain that the flow of the movie was accurate and genuine.

Cable Network News said that even if Aloha film was needled with nasty remarks from press. Crowe was proud of his work even if it was dubbed culturally insensitive film and or casting. He ended his public apology saying that his future casts might consist of "people of color", and tackle more on racial diversity and more truth in representation.

Aloha movie weakly performed on its first week of release. Regardless of having big actors in the casts, it only had $10.5 million sales.
