Nexus 5 owner tests efficiency of Google Android M ‘Doze’, discovers promising battery life; graph presentation

A Reddit user conducted a Doze test in his Nexus 5 starting May 31-June 5 in order to truly see its efficiency on Android M. The test showed that Doze can make the device's battery life last for 13 days.

When Google introduced their latest Android M mobile operating system in I/O, they mentioned a new feature that would improve battery life in a device, especially in their Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 2015 devices. They called it "Doze."

"Doze puts apps into deep sleep when the device isn't in use to save power, and Google's developer docs explain exactly how this will work. Doze is set to activate when a device is unplugged, stationary, and the screen is off. While in Doze, the phone or tablet will periodically wake up to sync data, but otherwise most things remain asleep," noted Android Police.

Although Google's Dave Burk showed data of the battery performance between a Nexus 9 running Android Lollipop and one having Android M developer preview, a certain Reddit user was still curious on how M's Doze feature would perform in a Nexus 5 device.

"I did a Doze test on my Nexus 5 because I wanted to see how efficient Doze mode on Android M truly is and here are the results after 4 days of testing," said Reddit user crackerforhire.

The results showed that Doze can make the Nexus 5 battery life last to an estimated 321 hours or 13 days. More details of his test result claim the following:

  • Time span: May 31 5:30 PM - June 5 9:00 AM
  • Total hours: 112.5
  • Remaining battery: 65%
  • Battery used: 35%
  • Battery dissipation per hour: .3111%
  • Battery duration estimate: 321.4285 hours or 13.39 Days
  • Projected date of dead battery: June 13

"Test was conducted on a stock Nexus 5 running Android M with no additional apps installed," he said.

With this, it shows that Android M promises a longer battery life in the upcoming new Google Nexus 5 2015, which is speculated to be released this Fall.

"In line with this expected Android M release, it is also expected that Google will be rolling out a new Nexus 5 2015 model, which will feature the latest Android M out of the box. If this is so, we should expect to see this Google Nexus 5 2015 before the end of this year, probably this Fall," reported Donklephant.

As for the release date of Android M, it is excepted to come out in Q3 2015.
