The paralympian athlete, Oscar Pistorius will be released temporarily this coming August after serving 10 months in prison for killing his ex - girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, last February 2013. The athlete fired four shots through a locked door which immediately killed the young law - graduate and model. He was charged with culpable homicide and is currently in Kgosi Mampuru jail in Pretoria.
According to Daily Mail, Zach Modise, commissioner of South Africa's correctional services, has already confirmed that Pistorius would be freed on August 21 of this year. This was expected by many as he was sentenced under South African law which allows one to serve only a portion of the original sentence.
However, many are still hoping that this is not the trigger to close Reeva Steenkamp's case. By November, Pistorius might face murder conviction as reported by News 24. This came after the prosecutors successfully challenged the initial verdict. The exact date is yet to be confirmed.
During the trial, the prosecutors pushed that it was an obvious murder. But Pistorius camp made a strong defence that the shooting was a horrible accident. The paralympian stated that he thought Steenkamp was an intruder.
Meanwhile, the mother of the victim, June Steenkamp, firmly believes that freeing Pistorius is not a good idea. She thinks that it is too soon for someone who has killed another person. This is being supported by a report from Herald Sun, which sees the early release as unjust.
South Africa is known to have one of the highest rates of intimate partner homicide in the world. Provided that Oscar Pistorius is an amputee and that they live in an area where crime rate, in general, is high, it made their defence even stronger. But with the possibility of facing the courts this November, he is yet to defend himself once again.
