Former Walking Dead mainstay, Jon Bernthal, has now been officially announced as the newest cast member of Marvel's hit Netflix series Daredevil.
Bernthal will not just be a bit player on the show, as he has been cast to take on the role of one of the Marvel universe's most complex characters in The Punisher, according to Marvel.
The Punisher is most famous for his devil may care attitude and utter disregard for the law when it comes to bringing evildoers to what he believes is rightful justice.
This will not be the first live-action portrayal of The Punisher as actors Tom Jane and Ray Stevenson have played the character in the past, according to Business Insider.
Marvel's Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, commented on the casting of Bernthal, saying he brings an "unmatched intensity to every role he takes on."
The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, is one of the more popular characters ever produced by the Marvel universe. His addition to the cast brings more intrigue into how Daredevil may play out, with the titular protagonist a fervent follower of the law and Castle going by his own rules.
Interestingly, Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has previously expressed interest in making a television show built around the character of The Punisher, according to Entertainment Weekly. Apparently, Fox was also working on their own television show revolving around The Punisher years before, but they were never able to follow through on their plans.
If there are plans to formulate a television show starring The Punisher, casting Bernthal in the role would seem to be a good first step towards making that a reality.
Since his star turn on The Walking Dead, Bernthal has been visible inside Hollywood circles recently, appearing in films such as "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "Fury."
Bernthal will also be appearing in the action thriller "The Accountant."
Season 2 of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in 2016.
