'The Crown': New Netflix Original Show Reveals Cast; Includes John Lithgow, Matt Smith, And Claire Foy

A new Netflix original show entitled "The Crown" will be hitting the small screens this coming 2016 and the initial cast for the show has been revealed. Matt Smith will be joining the show as Philip Mountbatten, John Lithgow has been casted as Sir Winston Churchill, and Claire Foy will be playing the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

"The Crown," a Netflix original series, will be about the story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who have helped shape the post-war fate of Britain. According to Coming Soon, the show will be telling the inside story of the Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street specifically about their intriguing lives as love stories and machinations behind the great events will be divulged. There will be two houses, two courts but only one crown.

Fans of John Lithgow are buzzing over his new role as he has taken on legendary roles before. He has been in the business for more than 40 years now and is best known for his role in the show "3rd Rock from the Sun" and the estranged father of Barney Stinson in the much-loved series "How I Met Your Mother." He is also known for his role as the serial killer in the series "Dexter." He has won three Emmys and a Golden Globe for his roles, Digital Trends reported.

"The Crown" will be written by Peter Morgan, who also wrote "The Queen," and will be directed by Stephen Daldry, who directed "The Hours." The producer of the show also produced "The Queen" and it is none other than Andy Harries. The Netflix original series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television alongside Left Bank Pictures, Deadline reported.
