Ubisoft's For Honor looking to reimagine the way combat takes place inside games

By

Ubisoft's E3 appearance was highlighted by their announcement of the new IP, For Honor, and it appears the studio has high hopes for how their new title may change the way in-game combat is designed.

For those who may have missed the announcement of the game, it is basically a pseudo-historical title with heavy doses of combat that also features quite a significant twist.

Instead of diligently adhering to historical timelines, the game instead chooses to blur them altogether by putting together knights, samurais, and vikings all in one setting, according to Venture Beat.

Apart from the unique collection of playable characters, the game also boasts unique multiplayer mode together with numerous customization options for the players, according to Siliconera.

Even with the intriguing cast of characters and the unique setting, For Honor is still banking on its combat system to set itself apart from other games on the market.

First off, each class is allotted a specific set of characteristics that play into how they may be used on the battlefield. Knights rely heavily on their thrust and parry skills, samurais are capable of showing off their mettle in various styles of combat, while vikings exhibit more aggressive behavior on the battlefield.

Aside from how the choice of character could impact combat, For Honor is also replacing the standard button-pressing mechanics present in other close combat games with one now based on right analog stick swings, according to the Telegraph UK.

Swings will apparently vary depending on the manner in which players use the right stick in combat, creating a more realistic system than what has been previously available.

Game director Jason Vandenberghe, who himself is an admitted martial arts enthusiast, has said that he has been working on the game for 12 years but only recently received the go-ahead to make it due to the recent success of shows like Game of Thrones.

For Honor is expected to be released on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 by 2016.
