The long-awaited sequel of "Independence Day" has been finally named. Roland Emmerich has recently revealed that the second installment of the action-thriller franchise which is due for a June 2016 release is entitled "Independence Day: Resurgence". Set 20 years after its first alien attack, the forthcoming movie will follow humanity's global collaboration in putting up a defense system to prevent future invasions.

In a live stream from the Alberquerque set, "Independence Day" helmer, Roland Emmerich, has unveiled the official title of the long-awaited "Independece Day 2". According to Cinema Blend, the 59-year-old director labeled "Independence Day: Resurgence" nothing like a sequel, but more of a reboot instead. "We call it in the film the War of '96. It's like a post-World generation that's unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's resurgence," he explained.

The forthcoming movie will take place two decades after the first alien invasion in the film's so-called "War of 1996". This time, the nations of the Earth have collaborated to protect the planet from future extraterrestrial invasion through establishing a defense system which according to the Hollywood Reporter, was built using recovered alien technology.

During the telecast, the filmmaker also introduced two of the spacecraft which will play a big role in "Indepence Day: Resurgence". First is the Moon Tug, a craft housed at the base of the moon; while the other one is the upgraded Human Hybrid Fighter Jet, one of the crafts featured in the first movie.

As per Coming Soon's report, the film will star Jeff Goldblum ("Jurassic Park", " The Fly"), Bill Pullman ("Casper", "The Equalizer"), Judd Hirsch ("Forever", "Numbers"), Vivica A. Fox ("Kill Bill", "Chocolate City"), Brent Spiner ("Star Trek", "The Master of Disguise"), Angelababy ("Crimes of Passon"), Maika Monroe ("The Guest", "It Follows"), Sela Ward ("CSI: NY", "Gone Girl"), Jessie Usher ("When the Game Stands Tall", "Beautiful Boy") and Liam Hemsworth ("The Last Song", "Paranoia").

Set to hit the big screen June 24, next year (almost 20 years after its first film's premiere), "Independence Day: Resurgence" features a screenplay from Emmerich, Dean Devlin and James Vanderbilt, James A.Woods & Nicolas Wright.
