Avatar 2 is underway and will include several underwater scenes, which was pointed as the reason why the film's release was delayed. The script for Avatar 2, 3, and 4 has been finalized and its release dates might fall on the same month in 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively.
Avatar 2 is expected to be more technologically superior than the previous film as director James Cameron is reportedly planning to increase the frame rate for the second film compared to the standard 24 frames per second.
Aside from that, reports suggest that the primary reason why the release for the sequel has been delayed is because Cameron was trying to develop a motion-capture technology which will now be used for the movie's underwater scenes. Speculations have now surfaced that the movie might be set in Pandora's ocean ecosystem.
But even with the technological advances, Cameron revealed that the Avatar sequels will still bear the same emotional and visual strength that once captivated the audience. "In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of 'Avatar's' visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild," Cameron said. Aside from that, the renowned director also said that the story will be full of action and will be a family story.
Meanwhile, Avatar 2 is said to be released soon in Christmas 2017, and subsequent instalments Avatar 3 and 4 might be released in the same date in 2018 and 2019. 20th Century Fox CEO Jim Gianopulos teased about this information saying, "...It is likely that the next two sequels, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 will also get the same exact dates on 2018 and 2019". Although the formal announcement for the release dates of the sequel has not been made yet, this plan sounds plausible especially after it has been reported that the script for the Avatar 2, 3, and 4 has already been completed.
As for the upcoming Avatar 2's cast, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will be back to reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neyriti, while Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang are also said to be back even though their characters died in the previous movie. James Cameron is set to direct all Avatar instalments.
