Godzilla is home. The people's favorite dinosaur is back in Japan as a new movie is set to be released next year but details still being finalized. Aside from that, Godzilla is now an official Japanese citizen and is even a tourism ambassador.
Just before Hollywood's Godzilla 2 hits the big screens in 2018, the famous monster is coming home to its country, Japan, as a new Godzilla movie is in the works, and is aiming for a 2016 release. The movie will be co-directed by Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) and Hideaki Anno (Evangelion's). Higuchi is said to be in charge of the special effects of the film while Anno will oversee the film's production.
No new details have been released yet about the film's cast and plot and it is also still reportedly being finalized whether the popular dinosaur will be made through CGI or if actors will be hired to don the Godzilla costume, or a mixture of both. But even with the scarce details, Toho did reveal that they will be working on the film on a tight budget unlike the ones created in Hollywood.
Meanwhile, Japan officially announced Godzilla as one of their citizens last April. Shinjuku ward mayor Kenichi Yoshizumi said that Godzilla is the character that is the pride of Japan and even offered him a job to be the tourism ambassador for the Shinjuku ward. Godzilla was also given a token of a giant version of his head which was later placed on top of the Toho offices. Toho is the film studio that made the original 1954 film of the now enormously popular dinosaur.
The reason for the residency given to Godzilla is reportedly "Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe in the form of the Godzilla head built atop the Shinjuku Toho Building."
More details are hoped to be revealed as Japan's new Godzilla movie nears its 2016 target release date.
