'Blade Runner 2' is currently in the works as a follow-up film for the science fiction masterpiece 'Blade Runner' from the 1980s. Actor Harrison Ford was said to reprise his role as special agent and replicant hunter Rick Deckard, the protagonist and narrator of the original film. Ryan Gosling was also confirmed to join Ford in the film. Behind the camera, celebrated director Denis Villeneuve and talented cinematographer Roger Deakins lead the reins for what promises to be a sequel that will live up to its predecessor.
The waiting public may not know much about 'Blade Runner 2' but they do know that when such a distinct team-up of cast and crew happens, the film is headed in the right direction. According to Deadline.com, the sequel's story will take place several decades after the first movie's timeline. Gosling, in a currently unnamed role, will add an intriguing and cool element to the film to be shot in beginning in the summer of 2006.
Many questions revolved around how the dark and intoxicating 'Blade Runner' will pan out without original director Ridley Scott. Now, it seems that Villeneuve is the perfect fit for the director's chair. In an interview with Indie Wire, he discussed some of his visions for the upcoming film. With regards to approaching some violent themes, he said, "When you think about the first Blade Runner, the violence was approached in a very human way. The violence was very maturely realized."
He also declared his love for science fiction movies even though he considered it a tough genre to pull off. He said, "It's just because it can be so poetic and strong when it's well done. It allows you to approach very deep and strong, and dark, sometimes, themes with a distance." He was very excited to work with Deakins on the sequel.
According to The Verge, 'Blade Runner 2' would be the third collaboration between Villeneuve and Deakins. The latter has quite the number of award winning work under his belt including the films 'Skyfall', 'The Shawshank Redemption', and 'No Country For Old Men'. He has received twelve nominations Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
'Blade Runner' was a dystopian science fiction film directed by the critically acclaimed Scott who was also responsible for several cult movie favorites such as 'Alien', 'Thelma and Louise' and 'Gladiator'. He may not be directing the sequel, but he is still on the team as executive producer. The first film garnered several accolades including 3 BAFTA Film Award wins and nominations from the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. It was best remembered as having distinctive melancholic visual elements and hallmarks of the neo-noir genre (coined from film noir). 'Blade Runner 2' official release is still yet to be announced.
