To those who are curious why the game was given such a title, Siliconera gives the details about this information. Quoting Monster Hunter X's executive producer, Shintaro Kojima, "Just as we said earlier, old and new elements cross over together in the game, so it bears the connotation of mingling. Moreover, the letter X looks like it divides the given space into four... so four hunting styles, four large main monsters, four villages. They're all crossing."

VG 24/7 gave us a glimpse of Capcom's live stream 30-minute footage of the Monster Hunter X gameplay. Although the commentary was in Japanese, you get the main idea of what's happening in the game.
