Dark Souls 3 Displays Faster Combat in a Post-Bloodborne Setting

By

Dark Souls 3 is currently featured on the latest issue of Edge Magazine. Here, the team who has developed the latest installment of the game series has provided a detailed information of how Bloodborne has influenced the Dark Souls 3 combat for a heightened gameplay experience, including an increased speed in backstep and the Ready Stance mechanic.

Edge Magazine noted two distinct changes in the Dark Souls 3 combat as posted in Tech Times. This includes the increased speed in swinging longswords, and in the backstepping move. The backstepping button and the button mapping, were seen as distinct qualities in other RPG series by From Software.

Some excerpts from the Edge Magazine Dark Souls 3 feature, which were posted in Games Radar are as follows: "There are traces of Bloodborne in the combat, too. While the new hero is no Hunter, he certainly seems more agile than before. The backstep in particular has been sped up, and a longsword is swung more quickly, too, with no apparent damage penalty (though enemy health bars - along with the entire HUD - have been disabled here, just as they were at last year's Bloodborne unveiling.)

The differences though that were noted between Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, as stated in Polygon include, more combat movements in Dark Souls 3 compared to Bloodborne's features. Dark Souls 3 is more on the defensive side, by blocking and breaking shields. Bloodborne, on the other hand, is rather on the offensive side as the player gets armed with weapons and enforces action.

The weapons in Dark Souls 3 have been improved for better fluidity. As what Edge Magazine have stated in their Dark Souls 3 feature, "That increased fluidity is mirrored in the weapon set as well; we find a scimitar on a corpse later in the demo that is, in fact, a pair and when dual-wielding them, the protagonist strikes with a level of grace and speed unmatched in previous Souls games."

The Ready Stance mechanic in Dark Souls 3 is a pose that allows players to perform different kinds of attacks. The Edge team describes it as this: "With a longsword equipped, for instance, the resulting attack is a forward-moving swipe that hits with enough force to break through an opponent's guard; later, we'll use a greatsword for a charging upward slash that launches an enemy into the air, slams them back to the ground, and deals enormous damage in the process."
