At the age of 24, starting to climb the ladder to success, Susannah suddenly finds herself in a mental hospital without any memory of how she got there. She uses her journalist skills to find out the cause of what she went through by interviewing family and friends, the nurses and doctors who took care of her, as well as studying security footage from the hospital. She later on discovers something life-changing.

We Got This Covered adds that Tyler Perry's character, who supervises Susannah, will be surprised to see the young journalist's life put to waste and worries about what could become of her with her condition. Meanwhile, other additional cast are Jenny Slate (Obvious Mind) and Richard Mann (Me, Earl and the Dying Girl). "Brain on Fire" is also seen as an awards venue for Moretz.
