The Martian is in the works and will tell the story of optimism and courage amidst disaster and fear. It is now getting commendations for its story's realistic details. Actor Matt Damon revealed how the movie differs from other movies about space.
The Martian, as the title suggests, will take its viewers to Mars along with an astronaut trying to fight emotional, physical, and environmental hurdles that come along the way. Watney who is presumed dead by NASA after getting caught in a storm, stranded alone in the planet, relies on his ingenuity, perseverance, and wit to survive and find ways to communicate to NASA and let them know he's alive, hoping to get help as soon as possible.
But aside from the story, another point worth noting is its realistic details that makes the story all the more believable. Business Insider has recently reported actual photos of Mars where Matt Damon's Mark Watney stays and travel through to get to Schiaparelli Crater where help will hopefully come to him, and get him back home.
The report showed some photos from NASA's HiRISE camera which includes the crew's home base in Acidalia Planitia, called the "Hab", the Ares Vallis, where NASA's Mars lander, Pathfinder is located which Watney will later use to send his message to earth, and a photo of the actual Schiaparelli Crater where Watney hopes to finally get the help needed to take him back home.
Although set in space, in a distant planet, the upcoming movie will reportedly be different than the other films which were also set outside of the Earth like Interstellar, and Gravity.
Actor Matt Damon said to IGN that most of the time, it's him (as Watney) in Mars, while it will also tackle how the rest of the world wanting him to be rescued, "I think one of the biggest differences is that it's primarily me on my own for a lot of it, and that's a big challenge. It's got all the bells and whistles of NASA and the whole b-side of the story is the rest of the world trying to get this guy back."
"But the other half of the movie is me and Ridley on Mars so that part's different. So you start there and it's this kind of mystery. What happened? How did he get there? And the mission part is basically that b-side trying to get him back. So structurally I think it's pretty different than any that's ever been done" he said.
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Drew Goddard. It is based on the novel by Andy Weir and will also star Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Kristen Wig, Donald Glover, Sebastian Stan, and Sean Bean among many others. It is set to hit theaters on October 2, 2015.
