NASA’s EM Drive: Will Space Become the Next Frontier?

Space, the last frontier for mankind. Since the dawn of history, humanity has looked up to the stars and wondered if it is possible to go there. Over half a decade ago, man has only reached as far as our moon. Recently. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has just confirmed that they are working on an electromagnetic (EM) propulsion system, known as the EM drive.

NASA wrote an article back in April that said they have been working on the a propulsion concept based on Roger J. Shawyer research and development for a small UK company, Satellite Propulsion Research Ltd (SPR).The concept stated that electromagnetic microwave cavities might provide for a direct conversion of electrical energy to thrust without the need to expel any propellant. This could mean that in the future, space crafts can lift off from the Earth without the use excessive rocket fuel. Furthermore, it might even be possible to travel through space in a shorter amount of time.

Speculations state that NASA is working on a 'warp drive', a science-fiction term for an engine cable of providing enough thrust that a space craft could travel faster than the speed of light. International Business Times said that NASA is not working on a 'warp drive' since the EM drive works by converting electricity into microwaves within the cavity that push against the device on the other end, causing the thruster to accelerate in the opposite end. However, there are news that NASA is working on an actual 'warp drive' called the alcubierre drive. In theory, this drive could possible allow faster than light travel.

The EM drive was conceptualized by Roger J. Shawyer back in 2001. Theoretically, this will help in vertical lift off of aircrafts and runs on hydrogen fuel, so it's eco-friendly. This technology will be the dawn of space travel in the future, all thanks to the hard-working scientists at NASA.
