"Sledgehammer" is the leaked title of the first episode for "Grey's Anatomy" season 12. As fans of the series know fully well, the episode titles for the famous medical series are usually based on popular songs which then are correlated to what the episode will be about. Sledgehammer, which fans speculate could be based on Peter Gabriel's tragic love song, hints some possible relationships problems for this season.
Series creator Shonda Rhimes has remained silent about some serious Grey's Anatomy season 12 spoilers. According to Christian Today, Rhimes said that this new season will be venturing into "uncharted territories". Although the show's creator has yet to divulge any concrete details regarding the show's latest season, the leaked title for season 12's first episode might have just given its fans a hint as to what they can expect for the show. As fans can recall in the previous season, some of the show's lovable couples met relationship troubles.
For starters, April Kepner and her husband Jackson Avery had a falling out during season 11 after she told Jackson her desire to enlist in the army. Meanwhile, Camilla Luddington's character Jo Wilson is feeling quite apprehensive with having to move in with Justin Chambers' character Alex Karev. Luddington further hints in an interview how this particular development in the story just seems "too good to be true". The third couple that also met with some relationship woes over the last season is Owen Hunt and Amelia Shepherd as the two still struggle with properly expressing their affection for each other.
It seems that despite the onslaught of possible heartbreaks for this season, fans can probably expect the worse especially after the tragic car accident of Derek Shepherd during the finale of season 11. Master Herald reported that it's quite possible for the new season to feature another major character death. The reported main reason for Shepherd's death in the show was actor Patrick Dempsey's refusal to renew his contract for the series.
The same situation actually happened with actress Sandra Oh who played Cristina Yang, another character in the series who had to leave due to an unrenewed contract. For this season, however, there have been rumors that Meredith Grey herself might just get cut from the show. Although the showrunners have yet to confirm the fate of Meredith in the series, there have been reports about Pompeo deciding not to renew her contract for the series.
Despite the loss of cast members, the series has reportedly welcomed newer characters for the season. According to the iDigital Times, Martin Henderson will be playing the role of a surgeon in the new season. It has also been reported that Henderson will become a part of the main cast and at the same time, a possible replacement to Dempsey's character in the series.
Grey's Anatomy Season 12 will premiere this September 24.
