Joe Taslim has officially joined the growing cast of "Star Trek Beyond". The Indonesian actor and mixed martial artist will reportedly play a part opposite to Idris Elba's villainous character. Currently filming in Vancouver, the Paramount Pictures' upcoming movie is slated to open in July 2016.
"Star Trek 3", also known as "Star Trek Beyond", may have already commenced its production in Vancouver. But the upcoming film has added one more name to its diverse and exciting list of cast. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Indonesian actor Joe Taslim has recently boarded the sci-fi project. Though the details are kept under the wraps, rumor has it that he is set to play a key part opposite Idris Elba, who plays a villain.
The 34-year-old actor is best known for playing the role of the police officer Jaka in Gareth Evans' "The Raid" and the villainous Jah in Justin Lin's "Fast & Furious 6". Apart from acting, he is also a popular mixed martial arts expert. According to Movie News Guide, he practices a variety of martial arts such as Pencak, Silat Judo, Wushu, Tae Kwan Do, and Shotokan. He is noted to have won several Judo championships as well.
Taslim joins the star-studded cast which includes Chris Pine ("Into the Woods"), Zachary Quinto ("Heroes"), Zoe Saldana ("Guardians of the Galaxy"), Karl Urban ("Dredd"), Simon Pegg ("The World's End"), John Cho ("Selfie"), Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") and Anton Yelchin ("Fright Night"). "Star Trek 3" is being helmed by another "Fast and Furious" alumnus, Justin Lin. The filmmaker directed three of the franchise's seven installments. The 43-year-old director took the directorial baton from J.J. Abrams who retained his involvement in the project as producer. Doug Jung wrote the screenplay alongside Pegg.
"Star Trek Beyond" is currently filming in Vancouver for a July 8, 2016 release.
