Today is the day that Google has vowed to start rolling out the monthly security updates for Nexus devices. The update will include a cover for the Stagefright exploit, which 95 percent of Android devices could be affected.
Starting today, Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and Nexus Player models are the select devices that will reportedly receive the Google security updates intended to protect them from vulnerabilities and issues.
According to pcmag, Android manufacturers are being advised by Google every month about platform and security issues, however, Nexus devices will reportedly receive regular OTA updates each month focused on security, in addition to the standard platform updates, from this week on.
The update will be simultaneously released by Nexus devices and Google and will place that code in the Android Open Source Project where all code will be offered for its Android software free to any user who wishes to have it. This also indicates that the timely updates or fixes to non-Nexus phones will be able to be sent by its hardware makers and carrier partners, CNET reports.
Last week, a Stagefright has been revealed, this is a virus in Google's mobile operating system which has the ability to give hackers access to people's phones just by sending a text. Moreover, a report from CNET states that a malicious text message is the one that is being sent by this virus that may also allow thieves steal personal data.
Stagefright is a vulnerability concealed in an Android media library, and according to Zimperium researcher Joshua Drake, 95 percent of Android devices, or around 950 million smartphones, are vulnerable. The engadget reports that the update coverage will still have the same duration.
In addition, it is said that the user will receive major OS updates for at least 2 years and security fixes for 18 months after your device leaves the Google Store or either 3 years after launch. According to pcmag, same fixes to the public thru the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) will also be released by Google.
