'Power Rangers' revealed its cast list and it drew heavily on past characters but each was given a new twist. Its scheduled release also ties in with 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'Dark Tower'.
Collider recently released a list of character descriptions for the upcoming debut and it brought to mind the teenagers portrayed back in 1990s but each was given more depth and complexity in comparison to the seemingly stereotypical performances of old. More focus was directed at their imperfections and insecurities.
According to the list, the five major characters will have more to them than their usual hobbies that weren't even mentioned in the descriptions. In the past, one could simply associate a character with his or her analogous interest.
In 1993, Red Ranger Jason was the jock and martial arts enthusiast, Yellow Ranger Trini was the environmentalist well-versed in Kung Fu, Pink Ranger Kimberly was the popular gymnast, Black Ranger Zack was the sociable party-animal, dancer and athlete, and finally Blue Ranger Billy was the boy genius and inventor.
In an article by Movie Pilot, Director Dean Israelite told audiences during an interview with IGN what they would expect from the upcoming reboot.
He said, "I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way... So I think it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things." Perhaps the newer casting call descriptions would serve the new film well.
According to Cinema Blend, the release date for the reboot had been moved around by Lionsgate Films and Saban Brands quite a bit but the latest official announcement called for its premiere on January 13, 2017 to avoid competing with other huge blockbusters.
However, it was reported that Columbia Pictures had also settled for the same release date for 'The Magnificent Seven' reboot and it looks like Sony's upcoming 'Dark Tower' is scheduled for the same as well.
'Power Rangers' is a modern remake of the popular children's superhero series 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' in the 1990s. The franchise generated two theatrical motion pictures in 1995 and 1997 and spanned home media releases, comic book series as well as video games.
