TV Fanatic states Season 5 Hell on Wheels 'Elixir of Life' shows an incident where Chang seemingly has regretted his past decisions during the Tin Hau Don Festival. Cullen and Tao were convinced that Chang has changed for the better. All the more when Chang admitted to profiting from the Swede in exchange for weapons. Little did they know that Chang did this as a diversion to lead him to the Swede and in the process away from the Festival and from Tao.
Paste Magazine divulges more of Chang's deceptive schemes where his diversion worked as planned. In the process of Cullen being away Chang hires a white gunman otherwise known as the "snake oil salesman" to kill Tao. With only Chinese as eyewitnesses to the incident there is nothing much that Cullen can do to bring the killer to justice. Chang pointed out the law that Cullen had previously cited where the Chinese cannot testify to the murder.
