The sequel to the Phantasy Star series will be released in Japan sometime in 2016 for Playstation (PS) 4. The game was originally available on PC in 2012, and a year later, on PS Vita. The free-to-play video game was made available only in South East Asia, and fans are still waiting on its debut in Western territories.
According to The International Business Times, it had been quite sometime that fans had been urging Sega to make a Western version of the game, but their requests had only fallen to deaf ears. Sega, until now, had not provided any reason why it had been shying away from the West. Thus, it is still unlikely that Phantasy Star Online 2 will be coming to North America anytime soon.
Until now, many are still playing the original game on the Sega Dreamcast. Some rode on the original game's success and created titles such as Phantasy Star Universe for Playstation 2 and Phantasy Star Portable on PSP, but neither of these didn't fare well and weren't able to capture the fan's affinity to the legit franchise.
But there was, at some point, where Sega had released the game in South East Asia with English-language support, as reported in Destructoid. However, Asiasoft abruptly cut it off and blocked IPs which are accessing outside the said region. Some can still go around these issues, but tinkering can just be troublesome.
The successful releases for PC, PS Vita and mobile might have given Sega an idea to extend it off and try the game out on PS4, mentioned in a Forbes report. Phantasy Star Online 2, the report adds, will release an all new segment called Reborn: Episode 4.
The game will be playable in PS4 at this year's Tokyo Game Show this coming September 17-20. Let's wait and see if fans will hear something from Sega other than a SEA release.
