"Alien 5" producer Ridley Scott could be holding up the film's production as he is reportedly insisting that his other movie, "Prometheus 2", should be made first. This delay may push back the tentative 2017 release of the "Alien" sequel back at least a year.
Ridley Scott's "Prometheus 2" continues to take a step closer to its 2017 release, with filming slated to commence January next year. However, 20th Century Fox's other sci-fi movie "Alien 5" seems to be having its progress slowed down. It turns out that Scott's long-gestured "Prometheus" sequel might be the reason why. Bloody Disgusting reports that the studio is holding off director Neill Blomkamp's project which Scott is also producing, to give way for the latter's upcoming movie.
Though the development for Blomkamp's movie continues, the outlet's source says Scott is insisting that his "Prometheus 2" should be made first. Slashfilm notes that neither of the two projects has a scheduled premiere date yet. So if Scott's request will be granted, it will likely make its way to the big screen by 2017. This then leaves the yet to be titled "Alien" movie's production to shoot in 2017.
This may be a disappointment for the fans, but the delay also bears a silver lining especially to its makers. The extended development would give Neill Blomkamp more time to prep the designs and the script of the film. It would also alleviate Sigourney Weaver's scheduling concerns that are brought about her commitment in James Cameron's forthcoming "Avaratar" sequels.
Meanwhile, the upcoming fifth installment of the sci-fi franchise will be a direct sequel from Scott's 1979 "Alien" and Cameron's 1986 "Aliens". "Alien 5" is tentatively scheduled for release in 2017, but with mentioned intrusion, its premiere may likely be pushed back at least a year. As for Scott's "Prometheus 2", it is said to open sometime in 2017.
