‘It’ Remake Update: Director Cary Fukunaga Cites Different Story Direction in Dropping the Project

"True Detective" director Cary Fukunaga revealed New Line Cinema's different idea on the direction of Stephen King's "It" remake is the reason behind his withdrawal from the project.

The fans of Stephen King and Pennywise the Clown have rejoiced when "True Detective" season 1 director Cary Fukunaga was named to helm the upcoming remake of the classic killer clown tale "It". Plans were already in motion and roles were already being cast when the 38-year-old director suddenly abandoned the project. Recently, Fukunaga has finally revealed the reason behind the withdrawal. It turns out that the split was caused by one simple reason: creative differences.

"It's never easy," he told Entertainment Weekly, saying that he and co-writer Chase Palmer had worked so hard on the script for the past three years. "Ultimately, we and New Line have to agree on the kind of movie we want to make, and we just wanted to make different movies," Fukunaga explained. "It's like a relationship: you can try to make the other person who you want them to be, but it's impossible really to change. You just have to work."

It was rumored that Fukunaga may have abandoned the movie project weeks before production was to begin in New York due to budget issues. Despite his withdrawal, the "It" remake is still moving forward. Just last month, the studio tapped "Mama" director Andy Muschiatti to sub in for Fukunaga's duties. Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are producing the two-part film via their KatzSmith banner alongside Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Barbara Muschietti, sister of the newly tapped director, is also slated to produce the film adaptation.

Based on King's massive 1986 novel, "It" was first adapted into a TV series back in 1990. It follows the story of seven children who come together over summer break to destroy a creepy, evil force troubling their town. "It" is a shape-shifting villain who mostly appears in the form of a clown named Pennywise. Set in 1957 in the fictional town of Derry Maine, the entity attracts young children as prey.
