"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" producer Wyck Godfrey says the upcoming movie will be bigger than its original material, but will still follow the story arc of the second book. The upcoming sequel is slated to open on September 18.
In an interview with Collider, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" producer Wyck Godfrey opened up about the differences between the forthcoming movie adaptation and James Dashner's second book. "I think we kept almost everything and added," he said. "It's ultimately gonna be a bigger movie than the second book because that's just the way [director] Wes [Ball] dreams." According to him, Wes Ball has a "much broader, bigger" imagination of what crossing the Scorch would be like. Thus, they have added a few more things in the big screen adaptation.
Despite this, the story is still sticking to the general theme of the story. "The same general arc of the second book is the arc of the movie," Godfrey said. However they made some tweaks to the characters, allowing them to be more proactive. "[But] you want to make sure that your characters are driving the story, that they're the ones making choices and that they're not reacting to everything WCKD does." He did stress though that the author of the novel series was involved in this alteration.
In a separate interview, the producer also revealed that they did not approach the movie as a straight adaptation of the second book. "We approached it more as using the same ingredients but using slightly different recipe," he explained to Empire. "So things from the first book end up in the second movie and there are things in the second book we're saving for a third movie."
"Maze Runner:The Scorch Trials" will star Thomas Brodie-Sangster ("Game of Thrones "), Kaya Scodelario ("Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes "), Will Poulter ("We're the Millers "), Patricia Clarkson ("Easy A"), Rosa Salazar ("Insurgent"), Aidan Gillen ("We Are the Freaks") and Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad "), alongside the "Teenwolf" actor. It is scheduled to hit theaters in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on September 18.
