A movie adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower will hit theaters soon as a director and scribes have been hired. The upcoming film will be based on the series' first book and has been slated by Sony for a 2017 release.
As reported by Den of Geek, Danish film maker and writer Nikolaj Arcel has been linked to direct and co-write the upcoming film. Arcel is said to be well-versed on the universe that King made for The Dark Tower, and even taught himself English in order to read the series in its original language.
Arcel will work on the script with Anders Thomas Jensen, and was originally written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. According to /Film, the upcoming film will be produced by Goldsman along with King, Howard, and Brian Grazer. The film will be executive produced by Pinkner, and Erica Huggins.
The upcoming film will be based on King's first book, The Gunslinger and will focus on Roland Deschain's relationship with Jake Chambers. The Dark Tower series centers on Roland Deschain who goes on a quest to find the Dark Tower, in hopes it will save his world.
As reported by Orlando Sentinel, the book series' author, Stephen King also shared his excitement with film's progress saying, "I'm excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen. Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books."
No news have been released regarding the film's cast yet, although rumors have made their rounds that "Noah" actor, Russell Crowe, or "The Counselor" star Javier Bardem might play as Roland. More information are expected to be released in the coming months. The Dark Tower is set to hit theaters in January 13, 2017.
