'The Purge 3', scheduled for release next year, will have Frank Grillo returning as Sergeant. He teased that the third film will be more political and will be better than its predecessor.
According to Slash Film, director and writer James DeMonaco didn't have a script ready before leading man Grillo signed on for the third installment of the horror action-thriller. Grillo appeared on the preceding film 'The Purge:
Anarchy' as Sergeant Leo Barnes, the heroic protagonist who began the film as a vengeful man who planned to use the annual purge night to assassinate the man who killed his son in an unfortunate car accident. He then ultimately becomes the savior of several innocent strangers he meets around the city.
Grillo seemed enthusiastic enough to return as Sergeant. He admitted that he loved DeMonaco's work and was a big fan of the seemingly 70's B-movie genre feel of the series. He said that despite the lack of script for the third movie, he decided that he wanted to work with DeMonaco again.
In another article by Collider, the 50-year old actor teased that the third one will be even better than the previous saying that it will be more political. He said, "You get to see where he came from, his origin, how this has affected him, and what he does to make some changes about it. He was involved in law enforcement at a high level, and he gets involved with somebody else who's also politically charged, and they go after the system."
The first film's storyline focused on a family trapped in their own home during purge night with a gang of killers outside threatening to break in and murder everyone inside. According to Variety, it starred 'Game of Thrones' mainstay Lena Headey and Oscar-nominee Ethan Hawke. Despite mixed reviews, it became a huge mainstream success at the box office earning $89 million against a $3 million budget.
Hawke could not return for a sequel due to plot-related incidents in the first film. Grillo stepped in to be the new leading man and he proved to carry the series as much as Hawke did. It was reported that scheduling conflicts with his television show 'Kingdom' made his return to 'The Purge 3' doubtful but since the former will be wrapping up its current season in time for a fall premiere, the actor is now available for a scheduled September filming.
'The Purge 3' is an upcoming horror-thriller film to be released on July 1, 2016. It is the third film in the series that takes place in a future where all kinds of crime - including murder - are acceptable for a designated 12-hour period every year. The protagonists are usually people who try to survive the violence and chaos within the government-issued annual event.
