Reports have it that Patrick Dempsey is close to signing a deal for a new movie "Bridget Jones Baby." The news comes after his character as Doctor McDreamy was chopped off from the ABC drama Shonda Rhimes series, "Grey's Anatomy. "

The upcoming film based on the popular Helen Fielding books starring Renee Zellweger will be the third installment of the franchise. It is said that she will be reprising her role as Bridget, the 40-something mishap-prone British publishing executive alongside her love interest played by Colin Firth, according to Deadline. It is not definite yet which character Dempsey will play as the many details of the film are still kept under wraps.

Sharon Maguire, who directed the franchise "Bridget Jones Diary" in 2001 is set to comeback for the project. Fielding and David Nicholls wrote the initial screenplay. According to the site, the production is bound to start in a few weeks. Hugh Grant is no longer part of the film, who portrayed the role of Daniel Cleaver so Dempsey it is most likely that he may play the part.

Back in April, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly a few days after he shoot for his final episode for "Grey's Anatomy," Dempsey revealed that he wanted to try something different. He had been in the ABC series for 11 years so it's quite hard to depart from his character as Dr. Derek Shepherd.

"Will I be allowed to do something different?" he asked Entertainment Weekly. "Is Derek so identifiable that I can't go on and be someone else? That will be the challenge. To see if people embrace me as someone else."

If everything will pursue, this will be Dempsey's biggest project after graduating from the ABC series. Although he landed on two small TV projects including "The Limit for SundanceTV" and ravelogue spy thriller called "Fodors."
