Guillermo del Toro's next feature, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, may not appear in the big screen anytime soon as filming is rumored to have been delayed in 2016. Del Toro also teased about having Godzilla fight against Jaeger for Pacific Rim 3.
As reported by IGN, rumors have been making their rounds that filming for Pacific Rim 2 which was previously set to commence in Toronto this November has been pushed back to 2016. The cause of delay was not cited although it also suggest that the film's original August 04, 2017 release date might also be affected with the production's delay.
According to Cinemablend, granting that the rumors are true, Legendary might choose a new release date for the film. However, given that the release is still 2 years away, they might also choose to stick to it, although it would depend on the scale and scope of the film's production.
Previous reports about the film suggest that the film will pick up some time after the events of the first film. It will feature a world trying to comprehend that giant monsters are no longer the constant threat. It will also reportedly show the Jaegers as well as the pilots.
Aside from Pacific Rim 2, fans can expect to see more of the Jaegers in the upcoming Pacific Rim 3. As reported by Movie News Guide, director Del Toro recently revealed that he would want to see a Godzilla vs Jaeger showdown if things went his way in the upcoming third film.
"so far with the sequel, what we're writing, what we're creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the f*ck out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain.", Del Toro said. Both Godzilla and Pacific Rim sequels are in the works under Legendary Pictures.
Del Toro previously revealed that Charlie Day and Burn Gormann are set to return for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, although the return of Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman are expected. More details are expected about the upcoming sequel are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
