'Iron Man 4' is speculated to take plot hints from the 'Invincible Iron Man' comic books. The character Mary Jane Watson from the 'Spider-Man' series makes a surprising crossover and teams up with Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man.

With no further news regarding the possible storyline for Iron Man's fourth standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), rumors and speculations have blown up among the Marvel fan base. One of these hot rumors involves the introduction of Mary Jane Watson into the world of Tony Stark.

An article by Movie Pilot revealed that Mary Jane will be a major supporting character in an upcoming rebooted solo title for the billionaire playboy and inventor turned superhero. The new series' writer Brian Michael Bendis explained his motives behind the unusual character pairing in an official announcement on Marvel.com.

Bendis said, "We were at one of our glorious Marvel publishing retreats and certain characters got brought up, sometimes almost accidentally, and I found out that nobody had anything going on with Mary Jane...I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark."

According to Newsarama, Bendis didn't explore Mary Jane and Tony Stark's relationship in the comic books any further since he wanted people to buy the issues to find out. He hinted that she used to live in Avengers Tower and that the team-up would be brand new and exciting for both fictional characters.

An article by International Business Times suggested that Mary Jane may be Iron Man's new love interest for 'Iron Man 4'. Mary Jane is portrayed in the 'Spider-Man' series as the titular character's best friend, love interest and one-time wife. The character was most famously played on-screen by Kirsten Dunst in the 2002-2007 Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.

'Iron Man 4' is a planned superhero movie in Marvel's successful MCU and may feature the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. The first live-action adaptation in the series released back in 2008 was critically acclaimed and popular among fans and critics alike. It was also considered a massive success in the commercial box office earning $582 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
