Natalie Portman's film 'Jane Got a Gun' has survived a whirlwind of problems. The film finally scored a release date care of The Weinstein Co., taking it from the hands of Relativity Media, which filed for bankruptcy last July 30.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Weinsten Co. is planning to release Jane Got a Gun in Europe this November and in the U.S. in February 2016. Originally in a partnership with Relativity Media, TWC was to release Natalie Portman's movie September 4 but the film's future became muddy with Relativity officially filing for bankruptcy last July 30.
However, the film major sponsor was attorney David Boies is law partners with producer Zack Schiller's father, Jonathan Schiller. The lawyer-sponsor helped removing 'Jane Got a Gun' from the bankrupt Relativity, avoiding long months of being stuck in the shelf.
According to Variety, this wasn't the only problem the film was troubled with. 'Jane Got a Gun's' first director Lynne Ramsay left a day before shooting was slated to start. Michael Fassbender also left due schedule conflicts with X-Men: Days of Future Past, followed by Jude Law, who cited that he signed on to work with Ramsay. Bradley Cooper also vacated the film, due to scheduling conflicts with America Hustle. Cinematographer Darius Kondji also excused himself from the film.
Director Gavin O'Connor took charge of the film and managed to start and complete the 'Jane Got a Gun' with Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor and Noah Emmerich. With the very first release date of August 29, 2014, 'Jane Got a Gun' was moved to a February 20, 2015 premiere. Possibly because they were heading to bankruptcy, Relativity moved the date again to September 4, 2015 before The Weinsten Company completely took over the rights and gave the 'Jane Got a Gun' the definite release plans it has now.
According to Collider, O'Connor hoped for 'Jane Got a Gun' to make it in time for awards season. However, TWC has expressed excitement over the film's final output and decided "to give the film a strong marketing and PR push" for both European and American releases.
Despite being out of awards contention this year, 'Jane Got a Gun' has finally found ammunition with its sure release date. Despite production troubles, Natalie Portman's film have caused quite a positive stir before it got entangled in the bankruptcy filing.
