Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank Corp said that if he fails to acquire Sprint Nextel Corp, then T-Mobile US Inc. will be its next acquisition target. This is the Japanese telecom company's way of leaping into the US wireless market.
In a statement to a Bloomberg reporter in Tokyo today, Son said that he wanted to go with Plan A if possible. The Plan A he was referring to was the firm's previous agreement in October to buy Sprint. The bid was at US$21.1 billion this week and aims to overthrow the counter proposal submitted by Dish Network. Son added that he doesn't have any issues about SoftBank's ability to pay for the deal.
The SoftBank CEO is counting on the company's proposed deal to Sprint as its jump-start in the international arena. However, fellow billionaire Charlie Ergen, chairman and co-founder of Dish Network eyes Sprint to diversify his satellite-TV company into mobile phone services.
