Google Glass, also known as Project Glass, changed its name to Project Aura. Google started developing the project in June and aims to include advanced technology like Soli and Cardboard.
Google is working out on Project Aura. According to the Business Insider, the project started rolling out in June. Its focus is to revive the wearable device, Google Glass.
The report said Google requested Nest Lab CEO, Tony Fadell, to oversee the project. Ivy Ross, who's also included in the Project Glass before will be managing the team.
Primarily, employees from Amazon Lab126 were also hired. Slash Gear cited they were the group of engineers and developers that were laid off by Amazon. The eCommerce company kicked out employees involved in the Fire Phone when it received bad reviews after a month of its launch. Amazon took the blame to its engineers.
The Project Aura team targets to incorporate Soli and Cardboard. Soli is a new technology that allows gesture sensing to navigate phones. While Cardboard is a virtual reality headset that turns smartphones into VR devices. Both are created by Google engineers.
On the contrary, Silicon Beat reported the med professionals found its new name as an odd choice. For them, the name corresponds to 'migraine with aura'. It is a condition that precedes a migraine after seeing zigzag patterns, flash waves and a feeling of prickling skin.
Anthony McCosker, a faculty member at Swinburne University of Technology, Media and Communications Department, replied to a tweet from Re/Code about the Project Aura, "Hmm, for sufferers of #migraines who feared Glass would bring a whole new level of pain, #Aura is not the best re-name."
The company stopped selling Google Glass to the public after it gained a lot of criticisms. There are also issues of privacy as the Glass is capable of video recording. At this time, Google continues to sell the Glass only to businesses.
Then again, it seems like Google has not given up on the eyewear. It continually disrupts technology like the VR and gesture sensor to make the Aura more beneficial.
