After the success of Fast and Furious 7, making a sequel would make sense. In order for this to materialize, Universal Studios needs to find a director who could bring the next Fast and Furious Franchise to success.
Box Office hit Fast and Furious 7 had a sad and dramatic ending with Brian O'Connor (the late Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) drifting into two separate paths. But it is not the end of the road for the Fast and Furious series as Jason Statham, the guy behind Deckard Shaw in Furious 7, has declared via comingsoon.net that there is going to be a Furious 8. "We're already talking about doing another one, Part 8," Statham said back in June. "I'm a newcomer! I just got invited to the party in this last one so it's nice to know I'm gonna be doing another... They've always got something good up their sleeve, and I don't want to be the one who spoils the plot lines but there is some great stuff I already know about."
With Statham's declaration it seems like the sequel is all set to hit theaters on April 14, 2017. Unfortunately, the 8th franchise has encountered a roadblock. According to Cinema Blend, Universal is struggling to get a director for the sequel to the franchise that earned $1.5 billion in global ticket sales. The two most recent Fast and Furious directors Justin Lin and James Wan are working on Star Trek Beyond and The Conjuring 2 respectively, so they had to pass on Fast and Furious 8. But there have been reports saying that the actual problem lies with the Furious 7 star Vin Diesel.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources have said that the demands of producing Fast and Furious 7 was so demanding were so great that is nearly cost Wan's health. In addition, sources have also said that from rewriting the script to adding special effects to resurrect Paul Walker, Vin Diesel reportedly was extraordinarily difficult as a producer. If these were true, then it would make sense for the two former directors and other prospective directors to turn down a project as big as Furious 8. With these factors, Universal reportedly is now "fearful" that Vin Diesel might at some point ask to direct the film himself.
The release date is set and Deckard Shaw is more than ready to cause bigger trouble in "Furious 8" . Universal Studios must come up with a plan to get a director on board because the clock is ticking, otherwise Dominic Toretto might have both the responsibility of "protecting his family" and running the show.
