'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is nearing its December release. In anticipation of the 'Star Wars' return, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy teased fans on what is the strongest link that links the next 'Star Wars' saga films to the original trilogy and the prequel.
In an interview with the Costco Connection Kennedy revealed that 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is part of the Star Wars Saga, and what connects them is the Skywalker family. "The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga," she explained. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is a narrative and "generational story" continuation of the previous six films, following the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
With Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia in the original trilogy and Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy, who is the new generation of Skywalker that will be the "focus" of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' and the subsequent Episode VIII and Episode IX?
Coming Soon reported there are many possibilities, especially when many of the last names of the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' characters are unknown as of the moment. One possibility is that Rey and new villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), can be Skywalkers.
Another Skywalker possibility, which Screen Rant reported, is Finn. The name might not be his real name as it is derived from his stormtrooper call signal FN-2187. With fuzzy memories of childhood and his birthname, Finn discovering "his past could potentially be a key plot point" for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.
Meanwhile, Kennedy's statement also explains the difference between the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' and 'Star Wars' Anthology films. The 'Star Wars' Anthology are spin offs that "offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the 'Star Wars' universe." The first of these films will be 'A Star Wars Story: Rogue One', followed by a 'Han Solo' movie.
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' opens on 18 December 2015. Lucasfilm has kept character details very secret during the pre-release phase. Director J.J. Abrams has also kept mum about these things, and the audience will know by the premiere. The movie will be followed by Episode VII(directed by Rian Johnson, release in 2017) and Episode IX (directed by Colin Trevorrow, set for 2019).
