Demi Lovato recently opened up on mental illness and the severe effects it has on one's self and the people surrounding them. The 23-year-old singer also spoke about her past mental illness and how she once struggled to cope on a day-to-day basis.
According to a report from MTV, Demi Lovato recently opened up to MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall where she voiced out her opinions on mental illness. The former Disney star had already spoken about her previous battle with bipolar disorder, addiction and an eating disorder in a previous interview.
After the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College last Thursday, many people have been blaming mental illness as the root behind the devastating crime. After talk host Tamron Hall mentioned how mental health has become a heated topic since the shooting, Demi Lovato took the opportunity to speak up on what she calls a 'serious, severe illness.'
People reported that Lovato wasn't afraid to voice out how mental illness can affect people and has actively been trying to spread awareness on the numerous illnesses which some people lack to notice.
In reply to Hall, Demi stated, "Well, unfortunately, we've had several instances where mental health has been brought to the attention by the media because of these tragedies." She then continued with, "I think it's really important," she continued, "to remember that actually mental health - people with mental illness are actually more likely to inflict harm on themselves and become the victim rather than be the perpetrators."
In another report from E! Online, the "Barney & Friends" child star turned singer also shared how she's been urging the Congress to focus on the national initiative 'Be Vocal: Speak Up For Mental Health', a campaign which has a special place in the singer's heart. After having to check in to rehab herself while on tour, Demi believes that people lack the knowledge on the said issue and mental illness need to be taken seriously with proper healthcare available for those in need.
Although the singer had her own rough patches in the past, Demi Lovato is now at the top of her game feeling as confident as ever. Being the strong-hearted woman she is, Demi is doing all she can to spread awareness on the various illnesses affecting one's mental health, hoping that people will gradually learn to understand more about what really goes on inside a person who's suffering from any possible mental illness.
