Will Smith has been largely silent about the long awaited 'Bad Boys 3', but in a recent interview he revealed that the movie can possibly happen in late 2016, or early 2017. While it's quite clear the Smith is involved in the film, it remains unclear whether he'll reprise his role or will solely be in a producer capacity.
In an interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1 Radio Smith commented that "there is a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a 'Bad Boys' within the next 12 to 16 months." Sony has announced a 17 February 2017 release which falls within Smiths timeline. Many fans hope it will come closer to 12 months than 16 months. Nevertheless, listeners were pleased that Smith himself has finally directly commented on the project, thus cementing his involvement, after months of speculation.
According Digital Spy UK, it is still unconfirmed whether Joe Carnahan will move forward as director of the sequel. The rumoured 'Bad Boys 3' director is also said to be in early talks to rewrite a draft script from Safe House's David Guggenheim. There also might still be chance for Michael Bay, the director of the original script, to come back for 'Bad Boys 3', as producer Jerry Bruckheimer has always been keen on him. However, it will depend on his schedule and availability.
Indie Wire wrote that Martin Lawrence, who is Smith's co-lead in the first 2 movies, is confirmed for 'Bad Boys 3'. Talking about the film's budget, the article surmised that "heftier salaries" will be part of it, especially for Smith and Lawrenc e. While the duo certainly brought the numbers in the first 2 movies, will they draw the crowds once more for 'Bad Boys 3'?
'Bad Boys' earned $140 million worldwide for a $19 million budget in 1995. 'Bad Boys 2' in 2003 had $130 million budget and grossed about $238 million globally. Speculatively, the budget may most likely be higher than the first's but unlikely to surpass the second's. As for the returns, it is difficult to say at this point, especially if Smith is not yet confirming acting role in 'Bad Boys 3'.
